How should you use Cromolyn Sodium (Intal)?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.

Cromolyn sodium is not a rescue medicine. It will not work fast enough to treat an asthma attack. Use only a fast acting inhalation medicine for an asthma attack. Tell your doctor if it seems like your asthma medications don't work well.

When using cromolyn sodium:

  • It is important to use this medicine every day, even if you have no signs of asthma

  • It is taken by breathing it in through your mouth. Please see your details on how to use your inhaler and how to keep the inhaler clean

  • You may need to use Intal for several weeks for it to work best

  • Your asthma may get worse if you have an infection, are unwell or come into contact with anything to which you are allergic. If this happens, talk to a doctor immediately

  • If you feel the effect of your medicine is too weak or too strong, do not change the dose yourself and contact your doctor

The starting dose is two puffs (inhalations) four times each day. Taking puffs at meal times and at bedtime may help you to remember to use it.

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

When your asthma gets better, your doctor may suggest that you lower your daily dose to one puff four times each day.  Your doctor may also suggest you take an additional dose before exercise.

To prevent bronchospasm caused by exercise or environmental factors, use the medicine 10 to 15 minutes before exercise or exposure.

Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully. Your dose needs may change if you have surgery, are ill, are under stress, or have recently had an asthma attack.

It may take several weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of using cromolyn sodium.

You should not stop using this medicine suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.

Asthma is usually treated with a combination of drugs. Use all medications as directed by your doctor. Read the medication guide or patient instructions provided with each medication. Do not change your doses or medication schedule without your doctor's advice. Every person with asthma should remain under the care of a doctor.

If you also use a steroid medication, do not stop using it suddenly or you may have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk with your doctor about tapering your steroid dose before stopping completely.

Store at room temperature; away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not refrigerate or freeze. The aerosol inhaler canister is pressurized. Do not puncture or incinerate even when it is empty.
